  • Be responsible for their own actions and score
  • Will strive to stay in the game with hopes of finishing strong
  • Be aware of game strategies

MATERIALS

  • One target for up to ten players
  • One disc (putter) per player
  • Numbered Poly Spots are best, but cones or other floor markers work well

SET-UP

  • Space targets equally apart in field or gym
  • Divide class equally among the four targets
  • Mark 10 spots around each target
  • Spots increase in 3 foot increments starting with spot #1 at 8 feet and ending at 35 feet for spot #10
  • Cut the distances in half for elementary

OBJECTIVE

Around The World is a fun putting game that allows students to attempt a variety of putting stances and styles while progressing around the target. There is a math version that forces students to think on their feet while testing honesty and sportsmanship.

HOW TO PLAY

Lesson: Simple Count Version (15-20 minutes)
The simplest version of Around The World has each made putt worth one point. All players start at spot #1 and rotate through the line until everyone putts the first spot. If the putt is made, the player gets one point. After all players putt, they gather their disc and the sequence starts again on spot #2 where a made putt is worth a single point. The sequence and rotation continues Around The World until all ten spots have been putted. The best possible point total is ten. Scoring is simple and easy to keep track of.

Lesson: Math Version (15-20 minutes)
In the math version of Around The World each made putt is worth the spot’s position as a value.(Spot #1 is worth 1 point whereas spot #8 is worth 8 points.) All players start at spot #1 and rotate through the line until everyone putts the first spot. If the putt is made, the player will get one point. After all players putt, they gather their disc and the sequence starts again on spot #2 where a made putt is worth 2 points. The sequence and rotation continues Around The World until all ten spots have been putted. Players should verbally announce their total score before each putt. (Maximum points would be 55 points).

  • Around the World is fun for all ages. The distances above should be adjusted accordingly to class age and skill level.
  • Self-accountability is on display within this game and should be stressed.
  • Variations can include different types of putts or stances. Straddle all of the odd-numbered spots for instance.
  • Smaller groups and older players can try two or three putts per target to up the scoring variance and math work.
